Industry Council for the Built Environment

Launched in 2009, the Industry Council for the Built Environment (ICBE) is comprised of leaders who determine and influence the quality of our built world. Design, planning, construction and engineering practitioners join with those in real estate, finance, policy, and media to ensure we are collectively producing a safe, healthy, and vibrant built environment.

Members of the Industry Council participate in:

  • Promotion of public education about the built environment;
  • Discussion of industry data, trends, and issues;
  • Networking across building industry sectors;
  • Research and consultation on Museum programming; and
  • Access to thought leaders and notable authorities from government, academia, and the industry.

2011 Annual Meeting

This May, ICBE members gathered for two days in Washington, D.C. to discuss the design and performance of a disaster-resilient built environment. On May 17, ICBE visited the National Academies and gained insight into the National Research Council’s pioneering work related to policy, technology, and the built environment. ICBE members met and spoke with National Academies representatives and learned more about current initiatives and programs.

Then, on May 18, ICBE convened a day-long forum, entitled Performance in the Built Environment: Design, Technology and Resiliency. The day began with a keynote focused on how cities and local industry prepare for natural disasters and included panels on Design and Technology, Building Materials and Products, and Smart Buildings and Infrastructure. Throughout the day, Industry Council members interacted with notable authorities and thought leaders. Participants were challenged to weigh in on how their own work connects with the day’s discussions and the upcoming exhibition Designing for Disaster. Participants also had the opportunity to network across industry sectors with other high-level professionals.

Membership

The Industry Council draws its members from both the public and private sectors.

Private sector members include leading corporate, association and foundation donors who support the Museum’s Industry Partner program at the $15,000+ level each year.  Each organization nominates two senior representatives who share the Museum’s goals and are interested in opportunities for partnership.

Public sector representatives serve 24-month terms and are drawn from elected and appointed government officials whose work impacts the built environment.
