Vincent Scully

Vincent Scully Prize

November 12, 1999

Through his teaching and writing during half a century, Vincent Scully has stimulated and guided several generations of architects and planners, and has become a preeminent voice for designing buildings and urban fabrics that reflect humane and civic values. He continues to be a powerful voice arguing against viewing a building as an isolated object and for designing buildings to suit the civic and human needs of a community. As much as any single individual in American today, he is recognized among professional circles, the academy and the general public as an insightful scholar and compelling communicator about architecture and urban planning. It was appropriate then, that the National Building Museum – our country’s paramount cultural institution exploring and explaining the what, who, how and why of American buildings - created a prize to honor his achievements.

The National Building Museum is grateful for the generous donations to the Vincent Scully Prize received since its inception, which sustain the program.
