City by Design
School Program
Grades K–5How does the layout of a city reflect the beliefs and values of the people who live there? What part does each of us play in creating a livable city? Students become city planners for the day as they design their own model city. Students consider the issues a city may face like traffic, overcrowding, and access to public transportation and services. Children use planning to solve some of these complex issues and provide the necessities of living to the imaginary people in their community. As a class students decide which buildings their city needs. Then, they use their imaginations to design and construct model buildings for the city using colorful supplies and recycled materials. This program meets content standards for social studies, language arts, technological literacy, and visual arts. This program comes with an Educator Resource Packet that includes pre- and post-visit lessons and information. Registration Details:
