Throughout our "Summer of the Museum" there are many special opportunities to tour the National Building Museum's historic home and special exhibitions.
House & Home*
The Museum's House & Home exhibition is a kaleidoscopic array of photographs, objects, models, and films that takes us on a tour of houses both familiar and surprising, through past and present, challenging our ideas about what it means to be at home in America. Remarkable transformations in technology, laws, and consumer culture have brought about enormous change in American domestic life. The breathtaking variety of stories about the American home will surprise, teach, and entertain.
Tours of the exhibition last 1 hour, offered Sunday and Friday at 2:30 pm, Wednesday at 10:30 am, Saturday at 10:45 am.
Special late night tour available at 6:30 pm on Thursday, July 26 and Thursday, August 23.
Historic Building Tours
Informative, fascinating tours of the Museum’s historic home are offered daily by Museum docents. Constructed of more than 15 million bricks, the Museum houses some of the largest Corinthian columns in the world and has been the site of 17 Presidential Inaugural balls, from Grover Cleveland's in 1885 to Barack Obama's in 2008. Come face-to-face with the colossal capitals of the Corinthian columns as you tour the Museum's fourth floor—not accessible to the general public!
Tours last 45 minutes, offered daily at 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 1:30 pm.
Special late night tour available at 5:30 pm on Thursday, July 26 and Thursday, August 23.
For groups of 10 or more, please see Custom Tours for more information. Tours are subject to docent availability. Please call (202) 272-2448 for docent assurance.
*Exhibition tours require general admission.
