Summer Camp Programs for 5th and 6th Graders

Explore topics in the built environment through art, building activities, and special field trips for campers entering grades 5-6 in Fall, 2017.

Early-bird registration opens to Museum members on January 10.Members must be at the family-level or higher to receive discounts and benefits.

City Builder - July 10-14

$350 member/$450 non-member | Extended Care - $75

Become an urban explorer and investigate the place where you live. You will use the city of Washington, DC to think about how the buildings, structures, and neighborhoods were laid out and planned. Discover how landscape architects and designers fit parks into the early plans for the Nation's Capital, learn about monuments and memorials, then design and build your own Washington, DC of the future! This program is designed for campers entering grades 5 and 6 in the fall and includes some off site trips.

Engineer It, Built It - July 17-21

$350 member/$400 non-member | Extended Care - $75

If you like to tinker and experiment then this is the program for you. You'll spend one week exploring different feats in structural engineering. Using the design process, you will conduct tests, take on different group challenges, and even build a bridge. Finally, using your new skills and knowledge, you'll take on one last challenge to design an invention. This program is designed for campers entering grades 5 and 6 in the fall and includes some off site trips.

Architectural Encounters- July 24- August 4

$700 member/$800 non-member | Extended Care - $150

Calling all aspiring architects! In this 10-day program you will be immersed in the practice of architecture and design - learning about important architects and the buildings they designed. Learn how to draft plans for a building or landscape of your own. Using hand drawing and digital techniques, along with professional quality materials, you will create a model of your design to take home. This program is designed for campers entering grades 5 and 6 in the fall and includes some off site trips.

Brick by Brick - August 7-11

$350 member/$450 non-member | Extended Care - $75

Experience the world of architecture through play! Using building toys such a LEGO, Lincoln Logs, fort builders and more, you will get to build model structures like actual architects. Compete in design challenges, build a tower out of bricks, design a special space for you and your friends, and more. If you enjoy tinkering with toys and love building with bricks, this is the program for you. This program is designed for campers entering grades 5 and 6 in the fall.

Woodshop for Kids - August 14-18

$400 member/$500 non-member | Extended Care - $75

Study the basics of the craft of woodworking, in this 5-day program. You will learn how to safely use hand tools like hammers, drills, and saws, then try you hand at different projects focused on joinery and simple carpentry. Take home a painted tool box/art caddy, try out some nail art, then create a project of your own. If you are creative and would like to learn a new skill, this is the program for you! Woodshop for Kids is capped at 10 participants for safety purposes.
