10 Ways to Build in the Snow

Now that summer has finally arrived, why not try your hand at construction in the sand? Enjoy these tips below as you and your family build with one of the most natural materials: sand.

Choose your sand wisely

For sculpting, you want your sand to be moist enough to stick together, but dry enough to maintain its form. Sand is often the best just after the tide moves out.

Recycle

Try using recycled yogurt containers to pack your sand tightly.

Try a tool from home

Shovels, spoons, spatulas, pastry brushes, and popsicle sticks can all be useful when sculpting in the sand. You may even want to bring a spray bottle to keep the sand moist.

Build a foundation

A strong castle—even one made of sand—starts with a solid base. Once your base is completed you can work on your central tower. Your tower can be completed by making small “pancake” shapes with wet sand between your hands and stacking them on top of each other.

Decorate

You can use natural materials found on the beach for decoration. Shells make wonderful windows and doors and seaweed can add extra embellishment.

Protect your structure

Dig a moat or “fence” around your creation to protect it from breaking waves or dogs on the beach.

Don’t forget to use your imagination; there is no wrong way to build a sand structure. Be creative and have fun in the sun!
