Kids’ View of the City features art projects by first and second grade students from John Eaton Elementary School in Washington, D.C., who examined their school’s neighborhood using the Museum’s land use planning program City by Design. The works primarily depict the school’s neighborhood, Cleveland Park, but also reflect the neighborhoods where they live throughout Washington. Students acted as city planners and identified the services that communities need before designing their own model city out of boxes, found objects, and art supplies. Kids View includes models of buildings and artworks, a student-created film, and other projects emphasizing cultural influences throughout Washington.

The year-long City by Design program, developed by John Eaton Elementary School teacher Margaret DeLorme, uses the school’s neighborhood — its history, design, and architecture — to develop and strengthen skills in critical and creative thinking, problem solving, and teamwork. The National Building Museum’s school program City by Design was the basis for the community exploration component of the student projects
