Description: In the wake of the terrorist attacks, Americans must make our buildings safer and our public spaces more secure. How do we ensure that the future is one in which life is not merely protected but celebrated? When it comes to security in the built environment, how much is enough, how much is excessive? At this symposium, a panel of architects, engineers, urban planners, and policymakers engaged in a dialogue about these pressing issues. Speakers included Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, regarded as America's leading politician to engage the issues of architecture, urban design, and infrastructure; Jonathan Barnett, FAIA, an architect and planner, educator and author of numerous works on the theory and practice of city design; Richard Farson, Ph.D., president of Western Behavioral Sciences Institute; and Jeri Thompson, Secretary of the United States Senate. Respondents included David Vere Thompson, AIA, vice president of RTKL Associates Inc, and executive architect for the reconstruction and repair of the Pentagon; Carol Blanar, director of facilities management, T.Rowe Price Group; and Thomas J. Rittenhouse, principal blast specialist, Weidlinger Associates, N.Y. Robert Ivy, FAIA, editor-in-chief of Architectural Record, served as moderator. This symposium was cosponsored by The American Institute of Architects, Architectural Record, RTKL Associates Inc., and the Urban Land Institute.
