Tom Slemmer

Tom

Tom Slemmer is president/CEO of National Church Residences, Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1961, NCR is one of the country's leading non-profit organizations specializing in the development, construction and management of over 21,000 units of affordable housing designed to serve the elderly, low-income families and persons with disabilities through federal and state grants, loans and tax-credit programs. In 2005 NCR was named as the leading not-for-profit developer of affordable housing in the country in the AAHSA Ziegler 100 listing. NCR was also named as the 10th largest manager of affordable housing by NAHMA. NCR's mission also includes assisted living facilities, nursing homes, home health care, hospice, specialized Alzheimer’s care, and three CCRC’s (continuing care retirement community). NCR has been a leader in integrating services into affordable housing through its service coordination program. Currently service coordinators provide social work assistance in 209 NCR properties.  In 2000 the organization began serving the homeless and now has three permanent supportive housing properties in its portfolio with two more in the development including one exclusively for homeless veterans.

Slemmer is immediate past chair on the Board of Directors of LeadingAge formerly the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging; (AAHSA) is a member and former chair of the AAHSA Development Corporation, current co-chair of the Affordable Housing Finance Cabinet, and a member of the AAHSA Housing with Services Task Force. He is past chair of the Elderly Housing Task Force, the Long-Range Committee on Aging, House Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee on Aging, Washington, DC. He has served as vice president of the Board of Directors of the Ohio Association of Philanthropic Homes and Housing for the Aging (AOPHA), and is past chair of the AOPHA Housing Committee. He is a former member on the Board of Directors of the Ohio Capital Corporation and is currently on the Board of the National Affordable Housing Trust and Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future.

Slemmer has testified before congressional committees on senior housing needs in 1990, 1996, 2000 and 2001. In September 2007, he testified before the House Financial Services Subcommittee on HR 2930 a bill to facilitate the development and preservation of affordable housing for seniors. In 1994, Slemmer received the Commissioner's Award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Excellence in Housing Award from the Ohio Association of Philanthropic Homes and Housing for the Aging. In 1995, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging.

He is married and has three grown children. Slemmer is a graduate of the Ohio State University with a Masters degree in Resource Development and Land Use Planning in 1973. He is a Viet Nam era veteran where he served as a helicopter pilot.
