Donald Albrecht
Donald Albrecht is the lead curator for the National Building Museum’s groundbreaking exhibition The
Green House: New Directions in Sustainable Architecture and Design. Albrecht is an independent curator who
has organized major international exhibitions about architecture and design, and is also currently the curator of
architecture and design at the Museum of the City of New York. He was a founding curator of the American
Museum of the Moving Image until 1992, when he began working for a variety of institutional and corporate
clients.
Current exhibition projects include the first retrospective of the work of architect Eero Saarinen,
primarily organized by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York from the collections of Yale University, in
collaboration with the National Building Museum. In addition, Albrecht has recently organized an exhibition
about photographer Samuel H. Gottscho and tastemaker and interior designer Dorothy Draper for the Museum
of the City of New York. He is also exhibition director and catalog editor of the international traveling
exhibition The Work of Charles and Ray Eames, organized by the Library of Congress and the Vitra Design
Museum.
Other past curatorial projects range from the exhibitions and catalogs World War II and the American
Dream and On the Job: Design and the American Office (National Building Museum); Making Architecture
(Getty Center in Los Angeles); National Design Triennial, The Opulent Eye of Alexander Girard, and Russel
Wright: Creating American Lifestyle (New York's Cooper-Hewitt Museum); and Glass and Glamour: Steuben’s
Modern Moment (Corning Inc. and Museum of the City of New York).
He regularly writes articles on design for magazines and newspapers including The New York Times,
House and Garden, and Architectural Digest, and is the author of the book Designing Dreams: Modern
Architecture in the Movies, published by Harper & Row and the Museum of Modern Art.
He is a licensed architect and has practiced in the offices of Philip Johnson in New York and Skidmore,
Owings & Merrill in Chicago. Albrecht is an adjunct professor at the Cooper-Hewitt master’s program in the
decorative arts and is a fellow of the American Academy in Rome.
