Anne Altman

General Manager, IBM Global Public Sector

Anne Altman currently serves as general manager, IBM Global Public Sector. In this role, she is the most senior executive responsible for the strategy, direction, and development of solutions for public sector clients worldwide. Ms. Altman’s portfolio spans the federal, state, and local government, education, health care, life sciences, and pharmaceutical industries. She leads a team of more than 7,000 technology, research, and consulting services practitioners globally who are playing a key role in IBM’s internationally recognized smarter planet campaign.

With a strong foundation in technology delivery, Ms. Altman joined IBM in 1981 as a systems engineer supporting the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She quickly distinguished herself as a transformational leader and strategist who understands how best to leverage the intersections of high performance computing, business analytics software, and research with the unique requirements of government missions.

Before being named general manager of IBM’s Public Sector business in August 2009, Ms. Altman held a series of leadership positions in software, global hardware and software, operations, technology development, marketing and consulting. She became the managing director of IBM’s Federal Group in January, 2000, leading a major effort to invest resources and align IBM’s broad range of capabilities in technology, research, services, security, and consulting to better serve the growing information technology needs of U.S. government agencies.

From 2007 to August, 2009, Altman was the general manager of the System z platform in IBM's Systems and Technology Group, responsible for one of the most important and critical systems in the evolution of information technology—from the “greening” of IT infrastructures to “cloud computing” which is transforming how governments, financial institutions, educational enterprises, healthcare groups, and other organizations are serving clients. 

Ms. Altman is a recognized thought leader who often speaks, and has been asked to deliver congressional testimony, on behalf of IBM on topics ranging from national security, technology in the military and intelligence communities, "smarter" government, intelligent transportation, cloud computing, business analytics software, the role of innovation to drive economic growth and government R&D.
