Description: April 7, 2002 In this symposium, architects and artists participating in the exhibition titled A New World Trade Center: Design Proposals, which opened at the Museum on April 6, discussed how the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site-and of 21st-century cities in general-might be re-imagined and realized. Panelists were architect Michael Rotondi, FAIA, principal of RoTo Architects; architect Winka Dubbeldam, principal of Archi-Tectonics; artist Mel Chin whose work addresses issues of habitat devastation, restoration and sustaining biodiversity; artist Vito Acconci whose art explores architectural forms; and art dealer Max Protetch. Robert Ivy, FAIA, editor-in-chief of Architectural Record, moderated the symposium.

The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center have ignited debate about the role of skyscrapers in the urban landscape, as well as the long-term prospects for the building type. This symposium featured Leslie Robertson, FASCE, structural engineer for the World Trade Center; Paul Katz, AIA, designer of what will be the world's tallest building in Shanghai; Bruce Fowle, FAIA, designer of tall buildings in Jersey City and Times Square including the Cond é Nast Building; and Witold Rybczynski, professor of urbanism, University of Pennsylvania. Robert Campbell, FAIA, Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic with the Boston Globe, moderated.
