2006 Careers in Construction Expo: News Release

Discover Why Construction Careers Are So Rewarding!

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Learn why the construction industry is the largest employer in the country at the National Building Museum’s Careers in Construction Expo Wednesday, April 5, 2006 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the National Building Museum. The free, one-day expo will introduce middle and high school students to the skills needed and training available for a variety of rewarding careers in the construction industry. Students can participate in hands-on demonstrations including a nail-driving contest, bricklaying, power tools, computer-aided drafting (CAD), heavy equipment, painting, landscaping, and much more.

Students and teachers can learn first-hand about the numerous opportunities available in the building and design industry and meet professionals representing the design, development, construction, and project management facets of the industry. Throughout the day students can participate in panel discussions and learn about the construction industry’s need for new, skilled craftspeople—more than 240,000 new professionals are needed each year just to keep up with the nation’s demands.

In addition to many hands-on activities, representatives from community colleges, universities, and training programs will be available to discuss a range of training options, apprenticeships, scholarships, and degree-granting programs. Careers in Construction EXPO 2006 is sponsored by Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. and Future Force Now.

Exhibitions on view at the Museum during the expo include Cityscapes Revealed: Highlights from the Collection; Jewish Washington: Scrapbook of an American Community; and Washington: Symbol & City.

The Careers in Construction Expo is free; advance registration is required. Registration is for school groups. Register online or contact Sarah Rice at 202.272.2448, ext. 3305, or srice@nbm.org for more information.
