One hundred years ago, Congress established the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts to guide the development of the nation’s capital. In this day-long symposium, noted historians discuss the design and planning of Washington, D.C. from 1910 to today, and the role played by the Commission in creating the national capital as we know it. The following are suggest readings all available in the Museum Shop.

This lesson is designed for students in grades 3-5 and can be adapted to fit into social studies, art, or language arts lessons. Try it as a pre-visit lesson for the Washington: Symbol and City school program.
