In partnership with the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation the National Building Museum holds an annual lecture program on the topic of women of architecture in conjunction with Women’s History Month. The goal of the Women of Architecture Series is to recognize and celebrate the professional and personal accomplishments of women in the field of architecture.
For the 2010 Women of Architecture program, Toshiko Mori, FAIA, founder and principal of Toshiko Mori Architect, will present "Role Models and Paradigm Shifts: Frank, Paul, Marcel and Me," a discussion of her work, including the creation of the Visitors Center at the Darwin D. Martin House, Frank Lloyd Wright’s residential complex in Buffalo, N.Y. For this project, Mori sought to “enhance the Martin House through contrast rather than imitation” and “reinterprets the Martin House to expose the structural, infrastructural, and programmatic relationships of the historic building, while continuing Wright’s lifelong interest in innovation through the exploration of new materials, technologies, and techniques.” This program is being held on International Women’s Day.
The lecture will follow a screening of the documentary film A Girl is a Fellow Here—100 Women Architects in the Studio of Frank Lloyd Wright (15 min.). Produced by the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation, the film explores Frank Lloyd Wright’s legacy in unhesitatingly employing women at a time when few architectural firms would do the same. Through the work and words of these women, the film reveals what they gleaned from Wright and where they departed from his model.
