Sustainable Communities

A new lecture series at the National Building Museum

WHAT

What do graying suburbs, national transportation policy, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) all have in common? They are all part of the innovative new lecture series Sustainable Communities. This multi-part series expands on themes presented in the ground-breaking exhibition Green Community and examines how and why we plan, design, and construct the world between our buildings.

Monthly programs are scheduled from January through October. The series kicks off on Tuesday, January 6 with a lecture by New York-based developer Jonathan F.P. Rose. He will discuss his firm's Highlands Garden Village—a walkable, transit-oriented development project located in Denver, Colorado. The project is featured in the exhibition Green Community, which will be open for viewing prior to the lectures.

In upcoming programs, panelists will debate the future of transportation in America, looking at issues such as the role of public-private partnerships, repairing an aging infrastructure, and continuing to build highways; an expert from Atlanta's CDC will discuss a revolutionary new community that, once a polluted brown field, has become a national model for smart growth and sustainable development; urban designers, researchers, and health professionals will address new challenges now faced by municipalities because elderly populations in American suburbs are growing at the fastest rate in the nation; and more. For information on other programs in the series, visit the series webpage.
