Spotlight on Design: Alberto Campo Baeza & Andropogon Associates
WHO/WHAT
Spotlight on Design is an ongoing lecture series featuring architects and designers of distinction from around the world. Since its inception in 1997, the series has presented many of the world's premier design voices in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and design, including Tadao Ando, James Corner, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, I.M. Pei, Glenn Murcutt, and Cesar Pelli. April's speakers, Spanish architect Alberto Campo Baeza and Andropogon Associates principal José Almiñana, who was trained as both an architect and landscape architect, are excellent examples of the diverse range of speakers the series has become known for.
Alberto Campo Baeza (4/8/09)
Alberto Campo Baeza's architecture follows the logic of pure forms and is characterized as being purist and minimalist. The exteriors of his buildings are simple, box-like structures, while in the interiors he creates noble spaces full of the strong "light" with the likes of skylights, high windows, and glass walls. Campo Baeza has taught at internationally renowned schools including Bauhaus (Weimar, Germany), and Columbia and Harvard Universities.
Campo Baeza will discuss his buildings including Turegano House, the Caja General in Granada, and his first American commission—the Olnick Spanu House in Garrison, New York—which was finished in 2008.
This program is presented with the Embassy of Spain and the Spain-USA Foundation, as part of the program Preview Spain: Arts & Culture.
Andropogon Associates (4/16/09)
Trained as both a landscape architect and architect, José Almiñana is a principal at Andropogon Associates, which is considered the pre-eminent environmental/sustainable landscape architecture firm in the United States. Since it was founded in 1975, Andropogon Associates, Ltd. has been a pioneer in the field of ecological planning and design, seeking to integrate functional needs and aesthetics to create beautiful, provocative and ultimately, sustainable landscapes.
Principal José Almiñana, RLA, ASLA, LEED AP will discuss the firm's work, which includes the Sidwell Friends School, the University of Pennsylvania's Morris Arboretum, and the Nikko Kirifuri Hotel & Spa located in Nikko City, Japan. This program is presented during National Landscape Architecture Month.
