Investigating Where We Live Exhibition Opening Reception

Friday, July 30, 2010 / 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

WHO/WHAT
On Friday, July 30, 2010 the National Building Museum will celebrate the opening of its newest exhibition Investigating Where We Live 2010. Investigating Where We Live is a student produced exhibition that serves as the culminating project for the National Building Museum’s four-week Investigating Where We Live (IWWL) summer program. The 2010 IWWL exhibition is a visual journey that showcases the participants’ fresh outlook on the city in which they live, and offers visitors a chance to see new perspectives of D.C through the eyes of young people.

In the IWWL program, middle and high school students from the District of Columbia and the Washington metropolitan area use digital cameras to explore, document, and interpret the built environment in D.C. neighborhoods. In 2010, students examined the neighborhoods of Petworth, Trinidad, and the Southwest Waterfront. Their original photographs, writings, and artwork are featured in this exhibition.

Participants met three times each week to work with Museum staff, photographers, writers, and curatorial experts. Three teams were assigned to investigate the physical and cultural aspects of their respective neighborhoods. Students also gained an understanding of each neighborhood’s identity by interviewing people who live and work there.

Major funding for Investigating Where We Live is provided by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, and The Beech Street Foundation. Additional support for outreach programs is provided by Abramson Family Foundation; Clark Charitable Foundation; The William Randolph Hearst Foundations; and Sunrise Foundation, among others.
