Interior Design Series Lecture Focuses on 18th Century Wallpaper
Glorious Splendor: The 18th Century Wallpapers in the Jeremiah Lee Mansion in Marblehead, Massachusetts
WHAT
Judy Anderson, author of Glorious Splendor: The 18th Century Wallpapers in the Jeremiah Lee Mansion in Marblehead, Massachusetts, discusses the magnificent and virtually unique original hand-painted English wallpapers that embellished the opulent interiors of the 1766-68 Jeremiah Lee Mansion, one of the largest and finest Georgian homes of its generation. Also included in Anderson's talk is a discussion of an array of colorful block-printed wallpapers, apparently once in the house, that reveals the range of color and pattern that could have been found in a mid-18th-century home.
The murals are the only English scenic wallpapers from before the American Revolution to survive in their original location, and one of only two suites of such papers in the world known to date. The other surviving set is in the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, from a high-style residence formerly situated above the Hudson River in Albany, New York. A book signing follows the program.
This is the first in a series of interior design lectures titled “INSIDE: Interior Design from the 18th Century to Today.” This program complements the exhibition House & Home, which is open for viewing before the lecture.
