National Building Museum Recruits for Historic Building Docents

WHAT
The National Building Museum announced today that it is recruiting for Historic Building Docents. Opportunities are now available to join the Museum’s historic building docent program, a dynamic and engaged group of individuals who are as committed to the building arts as you are. As a Historic Building Docent, volunteers are able to share with visitors the story of our historic home in a unique and personal way that is not done elsewhere in the Museum.

A two-year commitment to the Museum’s Volunteer Program is required.  In addition, Historic Building Docents are required to lead two tours a month or twenty-four a year. Docents are allowed to miss two sessions—with advanced notice—but January 24, February 4, and March 3 are mandatory. Tours will be approximately forty-five minutes in length and are offered to the public seven days a week at 11:30am, 12:30pm, and 1:30pm.  For more information and to apply visit: http://www.nbm.org/support-us/volunteer/.

WHO
Jim Garcia, who has been a Historic Building Docent for 12 years says, "I enjoy volunteering as a docent since I get to talk to people about this Museum's unique mission. It's a great feeling to enhance the visitor's experience as they learn about the Museum, exhibits, and the history of Washington, D.C."

Carly Shaw, National Building Museum volunteer manager, is fully aware of how critical volunteers like these are to the museum's success. "The NBM wouldn't be able to provide public programs without docents," she says. "In order to manage and serve all the enthusiastic visitors who walk through our doors, we rely on docents to be ambassadors of our mission and message."

WHEN
Volunteer applications for the program will be accepted through January 15, 2011. Training takes place on weekday evenings beginning January 24 and runs through March 15, 2011
Dates include: 1/24, 2/4, 2/8, 2/10, 2/15, 2/17, 2/22, 2/24, 3/1, 3/3, 3/8, 3/10, 3/15.
