Exhibition showcases successful examples of environmental initiatives emphasized in the Obama/Biden environmental plan
WHAT
Green Community, an exhibition at the National Building Museum through October 2009. In his environmental plan, President-elect Barack Obama emphasizes the importance of building more livable and sustainable communities, cleaning brownfields, and providing the tools communities need to build healthy, walkable communities. But what would these communities look like? The National Building Museum's newest exhibition Green Community highlights communities from the U.S. and all over the world that are putting these green ideas to work. The exhibition showcases a range of visionary designs, from modestly-scaled community projects and adaptations of traditional technologies to ambitious cities of the future, demonstrating that it is possible to find sustainable solutions regardless of community size or geography.
Featured communities in Green Community include: Atlanta, Georgia's Atlantic Station, which was once a brownfield and is now a mixed-use, walkable community; Greensburg, Kansas which was almost completely destroyed by a tornado in 2007 and is rebuilding green; and Starkville, Mississippi which has implemented a sidewalk and bike path project that encourages healthier means of getting around.
In today's political and social climate which emphasizes the inevitability and urgency of global warming, Green Community offers a positive perspective on places that are already embracing sustainable planning.
The presenting sponsor of Green Community is the American Planning Association. Major funding is provided by The American Public Transportation Association; The Nathan Cummings Foundation; Discovery Communications; U.S. Department of Energy; James G. Davis Construction Corporation; RTKL Associates Inc.; The Tower Companies; U.S. Green Building Council; and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; among others. Sustainability initiatives at the National Building Museum are generously supported by The Home Depot Foundation.
