Free Sunday Concerts in the Great Hall
National Building Museum and the Washington Performing Arts Society present free Sunday concerts in August
WHAT
The National Building Museum and the Washington Performing Arts Society (WPAS) have teamed up to present free concerts every Sunday at 2 pm this August. The concerts, featuring some of the best youth ensembles in the area, will be held in the Museum's majestic Great Hall. Performers include the WPAS Children of the Gospel Choir, Step Afrika! with WPAS Summer Steps Steppers, Feder Memorial String Competition Winners, and the Jazz Update with The Capitol Jazz Project Ensemble.
August 5: WPAS Children of the Gospel Choir:
Come hear the joyful sounds of our local youth in song. Washington Performing Arts Society’s Children of the Gospel Choir showcases over 40 uniquely talented young voices in their own distinctive style of high energy performances, featuring works by local and national composers.
August 12: Step Afrika! with WPAS Summer Steps Steppers:
Step to the beat! 140 students in grades 4-12 will perform along with Step Afrika!, the nation’s leading professional touring step troupe. These students are part of a summer dance camp which explores the tradition and instruction of stepping and other percussive dance styles.
August 19: Feder Memorial String Competition Winners:
Winners of the Joseph and Goldie Feder Memorial String Competition will be featured performing string works by composers ranging from Sammartini to Shostakovich. The Feder Competition inspires and nurtures the musicianship of local string students by offering winners free private lessons, cash awards, and summer tuition scholarships, as well as performance opportunities in the area.
August 26: The Jazz Update with the Capitol Jazz Project Ensemble:
Join us for an afternoon of music featuring student performers from WPAS’ Capitol Jazz Ensemble along with Jeff Antoniuk and Jazz Update. These young artists represent seven partner schools which participate in WPAS’ Capitol Jazz Project (in partnership with DCPS and in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center).
