Discover Engineering Family Day at the National Building Museum

Saturday, February 19, 2011 / 10:00 am – 4:30 pm

WHAT
The National Building Museum and the National Engineers Week Foundation welcome families, scout groups, and all curious visitors to learn how engineering relates to you! Kick off and celebrate National Engineers Week by participating in hands-on activities and demonstrations, and discover how engineers turn ideas into reality.

Throughout the day, children and adults can:
• Learn about the science of popcorn
• Test your own handmade watercraft
• Explore a tsunami wave tank
• Design your own parachute drop and hot snake spiral
• Meet PBS’s Sid the Science Kid and make a mobile
• Create a flinker, something that neither floats nor sinks
• Make slime and learn about liquids and solids
• Build a Lego® City and help operate Lego® Robots on the FIRST Lego® League playing field
• Become an aerospace engineer while discovering the principles of aerodynamics
• Watch PBS’s Design Squad Nation demonstrate the Pop Fly as they catapult beach balls across the Great Hall
• Try much, much more!

Major funding for the Discover Engineering Family Day is provided by the National Engineers Week Foundation, IEEE-USA, and the ASME Foundation. Additional support is provided by IBM Corporation, the Semiconductor Industry Association, and the National Science Foundation; with local support provided by American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Society for Engineering Education, American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Nation’s Capital Chapter, and U.S. Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program / U.S. Submarine Forces.
