For the Greener Good 2011

Panelists discuss nature, plastic, preservation, and passive houses during new season of For the Greener Good

WHO
participants include:
Susan Szenasy, editor-in-chief, Metropolis
Blaine Brownell, assistant professor, University of Minnesota School of Architecture
Eleni Reed, chief greening officer, Public Buildings Service, U.S. General Services Administration
Richard King, director of the Solar Decathlon, U.S. Department of Energy

WHAT
In its seventh season, one of the National Building Museum’s most popular public education forums culminates with four timely discussions about the state of sustainability in our nation. Each program features a panel of four speakers who discuss the following issues with each other and the audience. For those who cannot attend the program in person, the Museum will be tweeting live from the events and taking question submissions via Facebook and Twitter.

Inspired by Nature: Taking a cue from the natural world, architects, builders, and engineers can create a greener, stronger, and more sustainable built environment.

Life After Plastic: As a petroleum based product, many believe that as the price of oil rises, the cost of plastic building materials will rise. What is the future of alternate products for the construction industry?

Historic Preservation vs. Sustainability: The greenest buildings are the ones that are already built. But how does a community balance the historic fabric of vernacular architecture with greener buildings? Can’t we have both?

Passive House: What if the only heat for your home was the occupants’ body warmth? These tightly sealed buildings are being constructed across Europe. Is this the future of American housing?
