2008 Careers in Construction EXPO: Media Advisory
WHAT
The construction industry employs more than seven million people nationwide. Due to a shortage of employees, the current placement rate for workers in the industry is almost 100 percent. Will there be enough architects, contractors, and engineers to fill the construction industry's needs ten years from now?
Careers in Construction EXPO 2008 introduces students, grades 7-12, to employment opportunities in architecture, construction and engineering. Throughout the day representatives from career development programs, workforce training organizations, community colleges, and universities with information about degree-granting programs in architecture and design will engage students in a conversation about their future.
Additionally, there will be hands-on activities that allow students to experience a number of construction trades:
|
Drywall assembly |
Electrical engineering activities |
| A bobcat obstacle course | Bridge construction |
| Power tools demonstration | Design drawing |
| Nail-driving competition | Tile setting |
| Egg drop challenge | And more… |
Careers in Construction Expo 2008 is presented in collaboration with Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. and is an example of the National Building Museum's educational programming that teaches youth–the nation's future workforce–about civic involvement, generates interest in the built environment, and introduces them to career opportunities in the building arts and sciences. Founded on the principles of design education, the Museum's youth education programs help students explore the built environment, gain a fresh perspective on their surroundings, and begin to understand how design decisions impact the environment.
Careers in Construction EXPO 2008 is sponsored by Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc.
