Ladale Winling
2009 Field Fellow
LaDale Winling is a historian of the built environment and visiting faculty member at Temple University in Philadelphia. He has a special research interest in the role of American universities in urban development. His book project, Building the Ivory Tower, was supported by the Field Fellowship and illustrates changes in campus planning throughout the twentieth century, including the role of the federal government in financing expansion and the local politics and effects of campus growth.
As Field Fellow, LaDale examined the role of Washington, D.C.—area universities in promoting urban redevelopment, as well as the creation of federal policy—at the district and national levels—supporting the physical expansion of higher education institutions. The National Building Museum served as a home base for his research and consultation with staff and supporters was an important part of the fellowship.
